Scope and Content Suspension footbridge, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire This bridge was constructed for the convenience of workers in the Troqueer tweed mills. It was designed by John Willet and built by James Abernethy & Co, both of Aberdeen, which was becoming known for light suspension bridges. This view shows the ornamental arch between the columns of the west pylon, with the names of the designer and contractor, and the arms of the Burgh of Dumfries. This bridge was reconstructed in 1985 by WA Fairhurst & Partners, with a welded lattice-girder deck in place of the original riveted one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
