Scope and Content Disc-headed cross, Whithorn, Wigtownshire There is a distinctive Whithorn 'school' of stone crosses which date to a period of Anglo-Norse control and settlement in the Machars from the early 10th century onwards. Most of them came from Whithorn, where they would have been used as headstones. This cross, made from a single stone, has a shaft decorated with interlacing which is topped by a solid disc-head. The cross-arms which extend to the edge of the circle are carved on the front of the disc. The centre of the cross is marked by a boss. Stylistically, the disc-headed form of the crosses is probably related to the circled cross which was well-known in Galloway. The interlace patterns are Norse modifications of Northumbrian art.
