Scope and Content Palnackie Harbour, Kirkcudbrightshire This is a small harbour off the river Urr, close to its mouth. Because the site was muddy, the quay walls are made of vertical wooden piles, with planking behind to retain the mud, a technique used in medieval times. This view is taken from the end of the harbour, showing the construction south quay. Note the silt in the basin, brought down the river. Palnackie was an important centre for the Solway Firth coasting trade when it was carried on in small sailing vessels, which it was until about 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
