Thornhill, Nith Bridge General view
SC 449871
Description Thornhill, Nith Bridge General view
Date 29/8/1974
Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 449871
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Nith Bridge, Penpont, Dumfriesshire This is a very well-constructed bridge, with long segmental arches with ashlar arch rings, and a comparatively slender pier, with triangular cutwaters carried up to form refuges. The spans are narrower than the abutments. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The excellent proportions and fine construction of the bridge are clear. This bridge seems to represent a transition from the heaviness of design characteristic of many pre-1700 bridges and the more advanced designs of the 18th century.
