Auldgirth Bridge View from W

SC 449857

Description Auldgirth Bridge View from W

Date 29/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449857

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Auldgirth Bridge, Dumfriesshire This is one of the finest 18th century bridges in Scotland, with three segmental arches, and notably slender piers with rounded cutwaters. Paired pilasters extend from the cutwaters and abutments to support refuges with half-domed heads. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The elegance of the design, by David Henderson, suggests that Henderson had knowledge of contemporary French practice. This bridge was in use in 1974, but was by-passed in 1979. The old bridge has been left to one side in a manner that barely recognises its merit. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
