Scope and Content Sandstone quarry, Locharbriggs, Dumfriesshire The large-scale quarrying of sandstone began at Locharbriggs in the mid 19th century, and is still being carried on. This view shows a working area above the quarry, with a stone saw in a shelter. Note the rope-worked tramway for handling stone blocks. Since 1974 this quarry has been abandoned, and another opened.
