Mouswald Grange, Windmill View from SE

SC 449826

Description Mouswald Grange, Windmill View from SE

Date 29/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449826

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Windmill stump, Mouswald Grange Farm, Dumfriesshire This windmill stump is one of the largest in Scotland. The mill of which it is the remnant was a corn mill, for it has a kiln attached to it. The building is now part of a steading. This view shows how, on the left, steading buildings have encroached on to the base of the tower. The whitewashed building on the right is the former kiln. The reason that this mill was built is that this part of Dumfriesshire is in the 'rain shadow' of the high ground of the Criffel range. This. as well as the terrain, means that there are no mill streams. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
