Corsewall Lighthouse General view from E

SC 449790

Description Corsewall Lighthouse General view from E

Date 27/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449790

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Corsewall Point Lighthouse, Wigtownshire This lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson, and represents an early stage in the development of his personal design style. The castellated treatment of the base relates to the design of the lights on Inchkeith and the Isle of May. This view shows the lighthouse from the north east, with the foghorn at the base, and the later two-storey keepers' houses to the left of the tower. The raised bands round the tower and the circular features near the top are typical of the period. Since this photograph was taken the light has been automated, and the keepers' houses have been converted into an hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
