Portpatrick Harbour, Lighthouse View from SSE showing tower, basin and hotel

SC 449785

Description Portpatrick Harbour, Lighthouse View from SSE showing tower, basin and hotel

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449785

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Leading light, Portpatrick Harbour, Wigtownshire This was one of a pair of lights which, when brought into line indicated to mariners that they were taking the right route through the harbour entrance. The other one of the pair is mounted on a building in the main street. This view shows the light, of typical ship's masthead type, mounted on a cast iron lamp-post of the normal street-lighting type. The building in the background was an inn in steam packet days. Leading lights were commonly features of harbours with awkward entrances. This one was unique. It has now been replaced by an electric lamp on a tubular steel post. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
