Scope and Content Mull of Galloway Lighthouse, Wigtownshire This lighthouse marks the extreme south-west of Scotland. It was designed by Robert Stevenson, and is a good example of one of his larger, later towers. The flat-roofed keepers' houses are original, but the engine room for the foghorn is later. This view shows the engine room behind the tower, with the compressed-air reservoirs for the fog-horn to the left of the tower. The triangular-paned lantern is a replacement of Stevenson's original square-paned one. By the time this photograph was taken the light had been electrified and automated, using multiple sealed-beam, car-headlamp, bulbs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
