Description Logan Windmill View from NNE

Date 27/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449654

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Windmill stump, Logan, Wigtownshire This is the remains of a vaulted tower windmill, a type of mill used widely in Scotland in the late 17th century. These mills had cylindrical rubble towers, with linked vaults extending out from the bases. The type was distinctively Scottish. This view shows the windmill with the vault in the foreground. The battlements were added after the mill fell out of use, and were intended to make the building into a picturesque landscape feature. Mills of this type appear to have been built all over Scotland. The vault seems to have given access to the mill when the sails were turning, and was probably also used for storage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
