Scope and Content Wigtown Airfield, Dumfries and Galloway Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Wigtown airfield, taken during World War II. Opened in 1941 as a bombing and gunnery school, with aircraft towing targets over the nearby ranges, it became an aircraft storage facility and closed in 1946. Forty-nine accommodation huts can be seen to the west of the airfield. The German Luftwaffe took aerial photographs of parts of Scotland throughout World War II. The photographs were used for intelligence work, such as selecting targets, assessing bombing accuracy and finding equipment and defensive positions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
