The broad beach east of Lossiemouth was defended by a long line of anti-tank blocks and pillboxes, to prevent enemy landings. The bubble in the gauge at bottom left shows how far the aircraft was tilted from level flight while taking the photograph. The German Luftwaffe took aerial photographs of parts of Scotland throughout World War II. The photographs were used for intelligence work, such as selecting targets, assessing bombing accuracy and finding equipment and defensive positions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
