Scope and Content Cottage and shed, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-west Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows a 19th-century farm workers' cottage and, behind, a 20th-century concrete shed viewed from the south-west. The cottage is single-storeyed with an attic lit by small skylight windows in the corrugated metal roof, which was probably originally covered by local slate. Caithness landowners were providing allowances of between 12 shillings and £10 to 'new settlers' in Hilliclay, Sordale, Sibster, Harpsdale, Giese, Halkirk and Janetstoun amounting to £336 in total. Most of these incomers had been displaced from communal farms elsewhere and were expected to develop small areas of hill or moss into crofts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
