Scope and Content Walled garden, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-west Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the walled garden from the south-west, with the conical-roofed kiln and adjoining granary visible over the wall. The garden would probably once have been used to grow vegetables and the wall would have helped protect produce from exposure to the elements. Records at Thurso East Farm show large sums being spent on 'repairs and improvements', most of which was spent on drainage, fencing and dyking until the 1880s. In 1812, for instance, of an income from rents of £5,588, £328 was spent on repairs and improvements. This had risen to £1,370 from a rental of £6,750 in 1833. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
