Scope and Content Sacrament house, St Mary's Church, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire St Mary's is a rectangular church in the late Romanesque style known as Transitional and probably dates to around 1200. Remodelled in the early 16th century, it was used until 1811 when a new church was built, and its roof and woodwork were sold. Donated by the parson and dating to the 16th century, the sacrament house was a wall-cupboard made of stone. Generally positioned to the north of the altar, the Eucharist was displayed within it as a focus for devotion, whilst kept safe behind a grille. Inserted into a lancet window, the sacrament house is in the shape of a monstrance, the vessel in which the Eucharist was carried during religious processions. Above the pointed roof is a crucifix, with a skull carved at the base. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
