Scope and Content Bishops' Window, St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen St Machar's Cathedral is probably the fourth church on this site and mostly dates to the 15th century. It was damaged during the Reformation and ransacked by Cromwell's troops for stone to fortify Castlehill in 1650. The steeple collapsed in 1688. This is the Bishop's Window which was created by the stained glass artist, Douglas Strachan in 1913. Executed mainly in blue and yellow it shows the three master builders of the cathedral in profile: Bishops Kinninmund, Lichton and Elphinstone. This is a good example of Strachan's work (1875-1950). He was very aware of the medieval use of colour and of the relation of his windows to the position of the sun at various times of the day. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
