Scope and Content Drawing Room, No 3 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh No 3 Rothesay Terrace, remodelled in 1883 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, was the home of the philanthropist and newspaper owner, John Ritchie Findlay. The drawing room was photographed c.1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a ceiling divided into elaborate painted panels, and a magnificent alabaster Italian Renaissance chimneypiece at one end. It is furnished with a variety of Victorian chairs, including a charming S-shaped 'love-seat' (foreground). The room, at the rear of the house, had views over Dean valley to Well Court, a picturesque development of workers' houses also designed by Mitchell, and financed by Findlay as a means of helping Dean Village recover from losing part of its milling trade.
