Scope and Content Mill, Elrig, Wigtownshire This was in its day a large complex. Though roofless, it is included here because of its bone-milling component. Before chemical fertilisers were available, bones were often imported and ground into powder for spreading on the fields. This view over the complex gives some indication of the scale of the complex. The equipment for bone milling was similar to that used for corn milling. This mill appears to have been water powered. The use of bone meal as a fertiliser was the result of scientific study of plant nutrition. It was particularly valuable in improving the quality of pasture for the dairy herds that were the mainstay of this area until the late 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
