Scope and Content Malzie Smithy, Wigtownshire This is a single-storey masonry building, possibly adapted from a pair of cottages, and now with a corrugated iron roof. It is unusual in having a small waterwheel at one end, which drove tools and the bellows. This was derelict by 1974. This view shows the smithy from the waterwheel end, with the wheel to the right of the gable. As can be seen, some of the buckets were missing. The wheel was very small, only 0.53 by 2.44m, and was home-made. The smithy was still in use when this photograph was taken. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
