Scope and Content Garlieston Harbour, Wigtownshire This was built as part of the Earl of Galloway's model village, and enlarged to accommodate steamships, which were important until the railways came to the area in the late 1870s. The harbour consists of a pier and quay with a breakwater. This view shows the harbour at low tide, with the steamer pier in the background. The steamship berthed at the left-hand end of the pier. Garlieston was the most important harbour in the Machars (the name of the Wigtown/ Whithorn peninsula). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
