Scope and Content Bridge of Cree, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire This five-span masonry bridge has segmental arches increasing in height, though not in span, to the centre. There are pointed cutwaters carried up to form semi-hexagonnal refuges. The bridge was designed by John Rennie. This view shows the bridge from the south west. The strongly moulded treatment of the bridge is entirely appropriate to its setting in the middle of Newton Stewart. The weir protects the piers of the bridge from tidal scour. This bridge links Newton Stewart with Minnigaff, and was a component of the Carlisle to Portpatrick road, part of a strategic route to Ireland. The trunk road now by-passes Newton Stewart.
