Ken Bridge View from SW

SC 446196

Description Ken Bridge View from SW

Date 26/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 446196

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ken Bridge, near New Galloway, Kirkcudbrightshire This five-span masonry bridge is symmetrical, with segmental arches increasing in span towards the centre, and a gently curving carriageway. It was designed by John Rennie and is 103.6m long. This view shows the bridge from the south west. The graceful profile is evident, as is the large span of the central arch. The curved carriageway avoided expensive earthworks at the approaches. This is one of Rennie's finest bridges, and is notably plainer than most, the ornament being confined to shallow projections above the rounded cutwaters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
