Scope and Content Worker's houses, Lugar Village, Ayrshire The first iron-smelting works here was built in the 1840s, but when the Eglinton Iron Co took over they rebuilt the works on a plateau above the original site. The village was built to house the managers and workers in the ironworks. This view shows the front wall of one of the rows of workers' houses in the village. This one was on the road from the valley bottom to the entrance of the 1860s works, and formed part of the boundary of the works, hence the retention of the front wall. Lugar Ironworks closed in 1928, but the offices continued to serve the coal mine of the company and its successors. After the coal industry was nationalised central workshops and offices for the Ayrshire coalfield were built on the ironworks site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
