SC 446013

Description Ellon Station View looking NE showing island platform building

Date 15/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 446013

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former Ellon Station, Aberdeenshire This station was opened in 1861 by the Formartine and Buchan Railway, and was enlarged when a branch-line was opened to Boddam in 1897. This view shows the island platform and the platform shelter built for the interchange with the Boddam branch. The building is unusually large and elaborate for the Great North of Scotland Railway, which was by that time owner of both railways. The elaborate provision here was for the visitors to the Cruden Bay Hotel and golf course. Within a very few years motors had replaced the expected first-class traffic.
