Scope and Content Grangemouth Airfield, Falkirk Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Grangemouth airfield, taken during World War II. Opened as Central Scotland Airport just five months before the outbreak of World War II, Grangemouth airfield closed in 1955 and now lies beneath a BP oil refinery. The airfield was a major fighter pilot training facility during the war. The German Luftwaffe took aerial photographs of parts of Scotland throughout World War II. The photographs were used for intelligence work, such as selecting targets, assessing bombing accuracy and finding equipment and defensive positions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
