Aberdeen Harbour General view from ESE

SC 444721

Description Aberdeen Harbour General view from ESE

Date 14/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 444721

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Aberdeen Harbour, Aberdeenshire This harbour was in use for many centuries before improvement started in the 1770s. It was originally a natural harbour at the mouth of the river Dee, which was diverted in the 1860s and 70s. This general view shows the channel of the river Dee on the left, the Albert Basin (1869-70) in the middle, and the Victoria Dock (1840-8) on the right. The Victoria Dock was built as a wet dock, but is now a tidal basin. In recent years the harbour has been very busy with North Sea oil traffic, compensating for the decline in its once-dominant deep-water whit fish trade. It is also the terminus for a roll-on roll-off ferry service to Shetland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
