Scope and Content Viaduct, Skatie Shore, Kincardineshire This viaduct was built for the Aberdeen Railway. It has four spans, and originally had wooden arches supported on masonry piers. The timber spans were replaced in the late 19th century by plate girders. There are accommodation arches in the abutments. This view shows the viaduct from the west. Ironwork has been added to the tops of the original piers to support the new girders. The work was carried out under the superintendence of George Graham chief engineer to the Caledonian Railway. The replacement of timber spans here was part of a programme of renewal of timber and cast iron spans on the Caledonian which took more than twenty years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
