Scope and Content Friockheim Viaduct, Angus This structure was built by the Arbroath & Forfar Railway and after the opening of the Aberdeen Railway and its branch to Montrose became part of the only rail link between Arbroath and Montrose. It fell out of use after a direct line opened in 1881. This view shows the viaduct from the north east. The two arches to the left were blocked after construction to strengthen them. The elliptical spans have exposed longitudinal and transverse ribs, a feature peculiar to railways in this vicinity. The incipient structural weakness indicated by the early strengthening of two spans was revealed soon after this photograph was taken, when a partial collapse occurred, precipitating the demolition of the viaduct.
