Description Dumbarrow, Windmill View of mill, detail of roof line and relieving arch
Date 1974
Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 444591
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Stump of threshing windmill, Dumbarrow, Angus This windmill tower- - stump - now stands in isolation, but its slenderness, and the traces showing that there was at one time a building attached to it make it virtually certain that it was built to drive a threshing machine This view shows the plain rubble construction. The raggles cut in the lower part of the tower show where the threshing barn was attached. The projecting flagstone course was used for setting the canvas sails on their supporting frames. Windmills were occasionally used for driving threshing mills where water-power was not available, and where there was a suitably windy site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
