Scope and Content Bonthrone Maltings, Pitlessie, Fife This was a rural maltings, latterly making distillery malt, but probably originally built to make brewery malt. It consisted of two long ranges of malting floors, with three kilns a the west end, and a three-bay range of malt stores. This view shows the maltings from the north-west end, with the three-storey malting floors on the left, one of the kilns in the centre, and the malt stores on the right. The low brick building was used to load malt into lorries. This maltings, with others at Falkland and Ladybank belonged to the Bonthrone family, who owned a brewery and a distillery. The maltings were latterly owned by The Distillers' Co Ltd, and operated until 1968, when supplanted by new central maltings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
