Cults, Lime Works View of Lime Store, from SE

SC 444515

Description Cults, Lime Works View of Lime Store, from SE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 444515

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Cults Limeworks, Fife This limeworks was still producing crushed limestone for agricultural purposes in 1974, but there were substantial remains of earlier limeworking in the area, including clamp kilns, two blocks of shaft kilns, and remains of a private railway. This view shows the lime warehouse beside the western block of kilns. This was provided to store lime awaiting shipment by the private railway which linked the works to the Edinburgh & Northern Railway. This was a remarkable survivor of the estate limeworks familiar in the early industrial and agricultural revolutions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
