Date 1974
Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 444514
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Cults Limeworks, Fife This limeworks was still producing crushed limestone for agricultural purposes in 1974, but there were substantial remains of earlier limeworking in the area, including clamp kilns, two blocks of shaft kilns, and remains of a private railway. This view shows the western block of kilns, with two shafts, constructed of masonry, but re-fronted in concrete in 1936. Note the small holes in the upper part of the kiln front to allow steam to escape when the kiln was working. This was a remarkable survivor of the estate limeworks familiar in the early industrial and agricultural revolutions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
