Scope and Content Michael Colliery, East Wemyss, Fife This pit was sunk by Bowman & Co, and acquired by the Wemyss Coal Co in about 1906. It was a very productive colliery until a fire in 1967, which effectively closed it. though its reserves were later worked from the Frances Colliery, Dysart. This view shows the surface buildings of the pit, which was re-sunk in 1926, with the main downcast shaft on the left and the upcast shaft beyond the chimney. The headgear seen here was probably of 1926. This colliery worked seams of coal under the river Forth, and was connected underground with the workings of the Frances Colliery. The upcast shaft here was retained until the Frances closed finally, as that pit's second shaft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
