Scope and Content Troon Harbour, Ayrshire Troon Harbour was developed from 1808 by the third Duke of Portland for shipping coal from collieries inland. Until the end of the 19th century most of this trade was carried on in sailing vessels, most of which came in with earth ballast. This view shows a rail-mounted steam crane, which had latterly been used by the firm of shipbreakers who had operated in the inner harbour. Cranes like this were often used in harbours until the 1960s. The first railway to serve the harbour was the Kilmarnock & Troon, which was the first public railway in Scotland. It was bought by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway in 1847, and converted into a conventional line. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
