Scope and Content Troon Harbour, Ayrshire Troon Harbour was developed from 1808 by the third Duke of Portland for shipping coal from collieries inland. Until the end of the 19th century most of this trade was carried on in sailing vessels, most of which came in with earth ballast. This view shows a cast iron electrical supply box installed by the Glasgow & South Western Railway when they introduce electric power and lighting to the harbour, probably c1900. The Kilmarnock & Troon, which was the first public railway in Scotland, was bought by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway in 1847, and converted into a conventional line.
