Scope and Content Stanley Mills, Perthshire Stanley Mills were founded in 1785 for spinning cotton by water power, by George Dempster of Dunnichen, Graham of Fintry, Sir Richard Arkwright and others. Ultimately there were three mills, with ancillary workshops. This view shows the mill complex from the south. The Mid Mill is in the centre, with the East Mill adjacent to the right, and the Bell Mill to the left. The mills drew their water for power from the river Tay through a tunnel across a bend in the river. The water latterly drove a hydro-electric power station. The Bell Mill is now in state care, and the other two mills are being converted to houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
