Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443663

Scope and Content Ballater Station, Aberdeenshire This station was opened in 1866 as the terminus of the line from Aboyne, and subsequently rebuilt. Plans to extend the railway to Braemar never materialised, partly because of opposition from Queen Victoria. The line closed in 1966. This view shows the station from the south west. The buildings are mainly of timber construction. The cast iron porte cochere on the right was provided for use by the royal family, who had a private waiting room. The station buildings have now been converted for tourist-related purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
