Description Cambus O' May, Suspension Bridge View from top of raised walkway, looking WSW from E end of bridge

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443659

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Suspension footbridge, Cambus o'May, Aberdeenshire This footbridge was built by James Abernethy and Co, Ferryhill Foundry, Aberdeen, in the same style as bridges at Polhollick and Invercauld on the Dee and Aberlour on the Spey. This one was paid for by a Mr Alexander Gordon of Hildenborough, Kent. This view was taken looking over the short lattice-girder span over the railway to the long river span. This combination of rail and river spans is unique, at least in Scotland. Aberdeen was a notable centre for suspension bridge manufacture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most were exported. All had the wire-rope cables seen here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
