Kincardine O'Neil, Old Military Road, Tollhouse General view taken from roadside from SW

SC 443641

Description Kincardine O'Neil, Old Military Road, Tollhouse General view taken from roadside from SW

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443641

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tollhouse, Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire This is a good example of a bow-ended tollhouse, with its long axis at right angles to the road. It is harled, with a slated roof, and has an extension to the rear. This view shows the tollhouse from the south west. It is probable that the central window of the bow was originally a door. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were abolished in the 1880s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
