Scope and Content Former Alford Station, Aberdeenshire This station was built as the terminus of the Alford Valley Railway, an agricultural line worked by the Great North of Scotland Railway. The line closed for passengers in1950, but remained open for freight until 1966 This view shows the carriage shed, an unusual survival, situated at the very end of the line. Carriage sheds were rarely built after the 1850s. The Great North of Scotland and its associated lines were very economically built, as the country they served was not rich agriculturally, and many of its towns and villages, like Alford, small.
