Date 20/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443562

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old Bridge of Keith, Banffshire This is a small single-span humpbacked rubble bridge, with an almost semicircular arch. The bridge has steps up to the hump, but was probably built for pack-horse traffic. Wheeled vehicles were rare in this area until the late 18th century. This view shows the bridge in profile, with the slightly-splayed approach on the left-hand side. Bridges as old as this are rare in this part of Scotland. Many were swept away in the catastrophic floods of 1829. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
