Description Keith, Strathmill Distillery View from W showing malting kilns

Date 20/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443561

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Strathmill Distillery, Keith, Banffshire This Scotch malt whisky distillery was converted from Strathisla Mills (corn and flour) in 1891, and was then known as Glenisla-Glenlivet, in the fashion of the time. It was enlarged c1969 by Justerini & Brooks (Scotland) Ltd. This view shows the double kilns of the distillery, retained as a cosmetic feature after malting had ended., Most of the rest of the distillery, apart from some warehouses, was modern. This was one of the first new distilleries established at the beginning of the 1890s whisky boom. The mills from which it was converted had probably been superseded by urban roller flour mills, as elsewhere in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
