Dunkeld and Birnam Station General view

SC 443432

Description Dunkeld and Birnam Station General view

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443432

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dunkeld & Birnam Station, Birnam, Perthshire This station was built as a terminus by the Perth & Dunkeld Railway, and designed by Andrew Heiton of Perth. It became a through station with the opening of the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway in 1863. This view shows the main building from the street side. The Tudor style was popular at the time, but this is more elaborate than most, probably because it was on the Atholl estate and because the line was intended in part for tourists. The station was manned in 1974, but is now unstaffed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
