Dunkeld Bridge General view

SC 443430

Description Dunkeld Bridge General view

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443430

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dunkeld Bridge, Dunkeld, Perthshire This bridge was designed by Thomas Telford to replace a dangerous ferry over the Tay which was an important link in the communications between central Scotland and the Highlands. Construction was part-funded by Government. This view shows the bridge from the east. The five main segmental spans are evident, but there are also short access spans at each end. The north abutment contains the town lock-up. The bridge is designed in the grand manner, with castellated refuges and mock arrow-slits, reflecting the taste of the then Duke of Atholl, who contributed to the cost of the bridge, and on whose estate it was situated.
