Craigie, Weaver's Cottages View from NW

SC 443424

Description Craigie, Weaver's Cottages View from NW

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 443424

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Weavers' cottages, Craigie, Perthshire This row of single-storey cottages was, like Jericho and Douglastown near Forfar, an attempt by a local landowner to colonise his land with artisans, so as to increase his rents, though this is on a much smaller scale than the Forfar examples. This view shows the two blocks of cottages in the row. The scale is comparable with that of the Jericho cottages, but the roofs are gabled rather than piended. In the early industrial revolution dispersal of industry through the countryside seemed attractive, but the economic advantages of urban locations soon proved compelling.
