Scope and Content The Catstane, Kirkliston, Midlothian In Scotland, gravestones of the early centuries AD are found only in the Borders, the Lothians and Galloway. These gravestones demonstrate there were Christian communities in the south of Scotland in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The Catstane, a rounded boulder, bears an inscription in Roman capitals which possibly translates as 'In this mound lies Vetta, daughter of Victricius'. The style of lettering is suggestive of a late 5th-century date. It is likely that the boulder is a Bronze Age standing stone (2nd millennium BC) which was reused for an Early Christian inscription. The boulder is sited close to some stone-lined graves, another indication of Early Christian activity. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
