Scope and Content Branderburgh Harbour, Lossiemouth, Morayshire This harbour is, unusually, on an L-plan. The original work seems to have been a basin with a protecting pier and a outer breakwater. This basin was enlarged to the south in 1852 and another large basin formed to the west in 1860. This view shows the repair slips at the west end of the west basin. The motor fishing vessels drawn up for repair are typical of those using the harbour at that time. This harbour was probably intended for both shipping and fishing. It was the port for Elgin and its rich hinterland. In the later 19th century it became a very important fishing port, but as the size of boats has increased, it has declined.
