Scope and Content Ballindalloch Viaduct, Morayshire This viaduct was built to carry the Strathspey Railway over the river Spey. It was designed by Joseph Mitchell, and the ironwork was made by G McFarlane, Dundee. It has a long lattice (Town) truss main span with short plate girder approach spans. This view shows the viaduct from the west, with one of the approach spans on the right. The main girders are double-sided, like those on the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway, also by Mitchell, but made by Sir William Fairbairn and Co, Manchester. This was the first large truss bridge made by a Scottish contractor. It has been adapted as a footbridge as part of the Speyside Way, a long-distance footpath. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
