Spey bridge of Advie General view from NE

SC 440448

Description Spey bridge of Advie General view from NE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440448

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Reinforced-concrete bridge, Advie, Morayshire This bridge was designed by Alexander Hogg and the Yorkshire Hennebique Construction Co, and is unique in Scotland. It has three reinforced concrete spans in the form of trusses, a translation into concrete of a conventional steel truss bridge. This view shows the bridge from the east. The similarity of the profile to that of a steel bridge is clear. In the 1920s and 30s, when reinforced concrete was being used for the first time for large road bridges, a good deal of experimentation took place. This example was not repeated, but the bridge was still in good condition in 1974. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
